  • Municipal ALTs are employed by individual Boards of Education in cities, towns and villages throughout Niigata prefecture. These Boards of Education are linked together by the JET Programme through the International Affairs Division of the Prefectural Office. Municipal ALTs are Junior High School ALTs. However, they will likely have JHS, Elementary, or Kindergarten visit schools. Municipal ALTs usually spend a few days a week at their base schools alongside regular school visits and/or one-shot schools for the remaining days. Municipal ALTs have individual contracts with their Boards of Education. Although these contracts follow the same guidelines as the Prefectural contract, certain terms may differ. There are currently 65 municipal ALTs in Niigata.
  • CIRs are employed by local government offices in order to promote internationalization in Niigata. CIRs are responsible for translation/interpretation for government officials, teaching community or school foreign language classes, and organizing international exchange events. As a CIR placed in Niigata, your role may become similar to that of an ALT’s due to the size of your hiring municipality. There are currently 13 CIRs working in Niigata.
  • Senior High School ALTs are employed by the Niigata Prefectural Board of Education and are placed at a base school under the supervision of that school’s principal. SHS ALTs usually have two regular visit schools, although this varies. SHS ALTs have very similar contracts and the  information pertaining to job circumstances and expectations originates in the Senior High School Division of the Niigata Prefectural Office. SHS ALTs are expected to attend biannual contact meeting with other SHS ALTs, the annual Skill Development Conference, as well as assist with prefecture-wide Summer English camps. There are 27 SHS ALTs in Niigata.
